An Arlington Water Utilities project to replace 10 sections of critical 42-inch water main along West Green Oaks Boulevard was recently completed, with contractors finishing re-paving and putting the new water main into service in late September.

Starting in July, sections of main were replaced near or in the median of West Green Oaks from West Pleasant Ridge Drive to Waterview Drive. A total of 320 feet of new 42-inch main was installed. Arlington Water worked with the project’s contractor to make sure a majority of the work, along with associated traffic disruptions, was done by the time school began in late August.

For the Arlington assessment, Pure deployed a robotic device into the 42-inch main after Arlington Water Utilities crews isolated and de-watered the main. The device uses an electromagnetic field to check for breaks in the steel wire that gives prestressed concrete cylinder water mains their strength.

The work completed this summer included two areas that had already begun leaking. Inspections like those conducted by Pure Technologies are increasingly popular with municipal water and sewer providers that want to minimize replacement costs by replacing only what needs to be replaced. Earlier this year, Arlington Water Utilities replaced another section of the 42-inch main near West Arkansas Lane. That section also had begun to leak in an area of weakness pointed out in the Pure assessment.
