Arlington Fire Chief Don Crowson presented the department's Fiscal Year 2018 annual report Tuesday to the City Council, highlighting proactive fire prevention efforts, emergency preparedness and Homeland Security planning, public health and education initiatives and other priorities designed to keep the 99-square-mile city safe.

Highlights from the report include:

• City of Arlington received the ISO Class 1 designation, a Public Protection Classification held by only about 300 agencies nationwide.

• The Fire Department reported 59,777 unit responses in FY18, a 5 percent increase from the previous year. Nearly 79 percent of all calls for service were medical related.

• More than 24,200 fire safety inspection activities were conducted across the city, resulting in 3,917 violations being corrected.

• Community outreach continues to be a focus, with more than 18,350 people participating in the 218 fire and life safety programs offered by the department last year.

• The City’s 9-1-1 call-processing equipment was replaced with a new system that gives 9-1-1 calls priority over all other calls received in the Dispatch Center.

• The department made notable investments in special operations response, firefighter safety, job development, planning efforts to increase aircraft rescue and firefighting capabilities and more.

• Arlington purchased its first 100-foot aerial platform ladder truck, Tower 8, which is the most technologically advanced aerial apparatus in the City’s fleet.

• The City signed a new ambulance contract with AMR while keeping competitive rates for services. The ambulances serving Arlington feature new technologically advanced clinical equipment.

• The David Culhane Memorial Scholarship for Future Firefighters was established at the Tarrant County College Fire Service Training Center.

• The Arlington Fire Department and Fire Chief Don Crowson were honored by a Route Fifty 2018 Navigator Award for the Community Paramedic Program.
