Dream Builders: Arlington Public Library Promotes ‘1000 Books Before Kindergarten’ Challenge
A nationwide challenge, 1000 Books Before Kindergarten is a great way to get children on the path to literacy. This challenge requires families to read ten books in 100 backpacks. Once you’ve checked out and read through the 100 backpacks, children will have read 1,000 books and will receive a certificate stating the completion of the challenge. The goal of this initiative is to assist families in developing a love for reading at a young age and bond through this experience.
Backpacks can be checked out at any of our seven library locations. Each one contains fun picture books and board books all handpicked for children by our librarians. To track your progress, you can fill out our custom log or by downloading the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten app for iPhone or Android. Once all 1,000 books are read, bring the log to any library to receive your certificate. The backpacks were made possible by a grant from the Texas State Library and Archives Commission.
Due to the success of the backpacks, we’ve recently introduced 100 backpacks in Spanish. After a year and a half our new backpacks, 1000 Libros Antes del Jardin de Infancia, are now available at the East Library and Recreation Center, located at 1817 New York Ave., Arlington, 76010. All books are bilingual or completely in Spanish. Families can learn a new language or solidify the Spanish they already speak at home.
