The federal government’s $2 trillion CARES Act set aside $500 billion for individual assistance to help Americans during the economic downtown caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Part of the individual assistance will come in the form a stimulus check to all qualifying Arlington residents. Here’s how the process will work and some important information you may to consider depending on your annual income.

Economic Impact Payments

Checks will be sent to individuals and households based on income and number of children in the household, but only if they have filed a 2018 or 2019 tax return. Click here for additional information from the IRS.

Who is eligible?

Tax filers are eligible for the full payment if they receive up to $75,000 for individuals and up to $150,000 for married couples filing joint returns. Single filers with income exceeding $99,000 and $198,000 for joint filers with no children are not eligible.

How much is the check, and how do I receive payment?

Payment will be $1,200 for individuals or $2,400 for married couples. Parents also receive $500 for each qualifying child. Those that registered their bank account with the IRS will receive an automatic money transfer. If a bank account was not registered, a check will be mailed to the latest known address.

I am not typically required for file a tax return. Can I still receive my payment?

Yes. For some senior citizens, Social Security recipients and retirees who are not required to file a tax return, the IRS will use the information on Form SSA-1099 and Form RRB-1099. These recipients will each receive $1,200 as the IRS does not have information on any dependents.

I did not file a tax return, Form SSA-1099 or Form RRB-1099. How can I receive my payment?

Even if someone meets the income requirements, not all people are captured through the Form SSA-1099 or Form RRB-1099. If you are eligible for this payment, but do not file tax returns for 2019 or 2018 or these forms, make sure to file a simple tax return before the extended July 15, 2020 deadline. The IRS will provide this simple tax return soon.
