City and community leaders helped kick off the holiday season in The American Dream City on Monday night by lighting Arlington’s new 65-foot artificial Christmas tree.

The Christmas tree, which features assorted styles of traditional red and silver ornaments, thousands of lights, and a 7-foot tall lighted star tree topper, is located near the Levitt Pavilion in Founders Plaza. It was made possible by the Arlington Tomorrow Foundation and the work of volunteers with the nonprofit organization, Arlington Christmas Parade, Inc., which has organized the popular Arlington Holiday Lights Parade for years.

"The new artificial tree aligns with our City Council’s mission to revitalize Downtown and make sure the heart of our city is a place people want to visit. With the growth of small businesses here in Downtown, the state-designated Cultural Arts District and the Abram Street Rebuild, which will be complete next spring, we’re making sure our Downtown is walkable, vibrant and a key destination not just for our residents, but for visitors across the state as well," Arlington Mayor Jeff Williams said.

In keeping with tradition, the official tree lighting ceremony will follow the end of the Arlington Holiday Lights Parade at around 7 p.m. on Dec. 14. Make plans now to bring out the family to enjoy the parade, live music, pictures with Santa and other free festivities, which begin at 2 p.m.in Downtown.

Other parade activities include free music from the Arlington High School Jazz Band, Sam Houston High School Orchestra and the Sam Houston High School Mariachis at Levitt Pavilion, pictures with Santa, children’s games, a free screening of Disney’s The Santa Clause at 7:30 p.m., and lots of opportunities to make lasting holiday memories.
