On July 15, 2020, the Public Works and Transportation Department began construction to improve Calender Road, from Curry Road to Harris Drive. This project, which is part of the City’s Thoroughfare Development Plan, aims to rebuild Calender Road from a two-lane county type asphalt road to a three-lane concrete road.

In addition to rebuilding the roadway, the project will also bring the following improvements to the area:

  • Installation of sidewalks and streetlight improvements
  • Construction of roundabouts at Curry and Kuykendall Road intersections
  • Storm drainage infrastructure improvements
  • Water and sanitary sewer infrastructure improvements
  • Installation of two on-street bicycle lanes

Funding for this project was approved by Arlington voters as part of the $160 million street improvements package in the 2014 Bond Election and aligns with the City Council’s priorities to Enhance Regional Mobility and Champion Great Neighborhoods.

The Thoroughfare Development Plan (TDP) is a long-range planning tool that assists city staff in making decisions about the City’s transportation network. The TDP also allows for the testing of various transportation scenarios, including the impact that new land uses and demographic information potentially has on the number of lanes, level of service, delay, connectivity, and other measures of effectiveness.

Additional information about this project, including answers to frequently asked questions, can be found on the project’s webpage, www.arlingtontx.gov/calenderroad.

Residents can learn more about roadway, drainage, and water projects currently under construction throughout Arlington using the City’s interactive Street Tracker map. This tool integrates live data so that up-to-date project information is always available.
