As we work to stop the spread of coronavirus, Arlington leaders are answering your questions. In the latest Ask Arlington, we address the importance of masks and plans to make sure hospitals aren't overwhelmed.

How does wearing a mask help the Arlington community?

"Wearing a mask means you're being kind, safe and healthy," explained Arlington Mayor Jeff Williams. Governor Greg Abbott recently ordered Texans to wear masks in places where social distancing isn't possible. And the Arlington City Council strongly supports the order. "By wearing a mask, you're being respectful of others and helping us slow the spread of COVID-19," Mayor Williams said.

Does wearing a mask help stop the spread of COVID-19?

"We're five months into this pandemic, and it's had a huge impact on all of us," explained Dr. Cynthia Simmons, Arlington's Public Health Authority. "The one way we can continue to get back to normal and reduce the spread of this virus is by wearing masks. It's shown to be very effective." Dr. Simmons says we must also continue practicing good hygiene and social distancing.

How will North Texas communities work together to ensure hospital space doesn't become overwhelmed due to COVID-19 cases?

Arlington's Emergency Operations Center met with hospitals at the beginning of the pandemic to develop surge plans. As of now, none of those plans have been needed. "What we're trying to do is avoid implementation of surge strategies," explained Arlington Fire Chief Don Crowson. "One thing you can do, as a citizen, is wear a mask." Your decision to wear a mask could take stress off our medical community and keep hospitals from activating surge plans.

How does wearing a mask help Arlington businesses?

"Wearing a mask is essential when it comes to keeping both customers and employees safe," Mayor Williams said. "Small businesses are the backbone of our local economy, but we need to do our part to keep them open."  As a reminder, many Arlington restaurants and businesses continue offering curbside pickup and delivery options.
