Arlington Urban Design Center

The Arlington Urban Design Center, celebrating its 10th anniversary, was created as a partnership between the City and The University of Texas at Arlington to provide real-world conceptual design experience for graduate students as well as no-cost, high-quality design services to the public.

Graduate students from UT Arlington’s College of Architecture, Planning and Public Affairs, working closely with city staff, have provided free design solutions worth an estimated $2.3 million over the past decade to residents, businesses, neighborhoods and other organizations looking to make improvements to their properties.

More than 50 graduate students have interned at the Arlington Urban Design Center, which opened on the first floor of City Hall in 2009. In all, the interns have completed 374 projects, which have included business façade improvements, site plans, streetscape and landscape plans, and building and interior design. Some of the 72 projects that have become reality thanks to the interns’ valuable work include the Tuscany Lake Neighborhood landscape design, the Miracle League pavilion design at Randol Mill Park, the City Hall lobby desk design and the Downtown Arlington Management Cooperation’s new office design.

In September, the Arlington City Council approved a three-year interlocal cooperation contract extension with UTA to continue the success of the Arlington Urban Design Center.
