The highly anticipated day is here! Essay entries for this year’s Sheri Capehart Animal Essay Contest will be accepted beginning Monday, Jan. 9, 2023. The deadline for an essay entry is 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan.13, 2023.

The contest, in its 22nd year, is open to third through sixth grade students who live in Arlington and attend either public, private or home school.

Entries may be hand-delivered between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. to the following locations:

Don’t miss the quickly approaching entry deadline – you could win! No hand-delivered entries will be accepted after 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13, 2023.

Essay topics

Grade 3: If you could make up a holiday for animals, what holiday would it be and how would you celebrate it?

Grade 4: How do you think animals communicate with people?

Grade 5: If you could make one rule for the world to follow about animals and everyone had to follow it…. what would that rule be?

Grade 6: In 2060, how will animal shelters be different than they are today?

Important reminders

  • Only one essay per student. 
  • Previous winners are ineligible.
  • Submitted material must be original, 500 words or less, typed or handwritten.
  • Students must reside within the City of Arlington.
  • The entry must contain a cover sheet must be stapled to the essay containing the following student information: 
  • Student’s name, address and phone number
  • Student’s grade level
  • Name of school and teacher’s name
  • Names of your two favorite books
