Hand in Hand Share Missions, a Tarrant County nonprofit that organizes aid and mission trips to Vietnam, is coordinating an effort to benefit local health care and emergency management professionals on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 1975 Meals to Heal DFW project has a goal of raising $20,000 to provide meals from local restaurants for workers at nursing homes, hospitals and COVID-19 testing centers in North Texas. Using social media and their website, Hand in Hand began inviting community members to make donations of $19.75 or more to the Meals to Heal project last week. They were already halfway to their goal by Tuesday and hope to deliver meals on Wednesday.

“April 30, 1975 is a meaningful day to Vietnamese culture,” said Hand-in-Hand Secretary Lan Pham, referring to the end of the Vietnam War and the migration of Vietnamese families to the U.S. The 1975 Meals to Heal organizers “just wanted to honor our parents by doing something special and with the pandemic going on, they wanted to do something for the frontline workers,” she said.

Arlington restaurants Sprout’s Springroll and Pho, The Halal Guys and BB.Q Chicken are participating in the 1975 Meals to Heal project. Pham said Meals to Heal has plans to deliver food to staff at two nursing homes in Arlington on Wednesday and to locations in the city where healthcare workers are conducting COVID-19 testing. There is still time to donate to the 1975 Meals to Heal fundraiser by visiting the Hand in Hand Share Missions website at www.hhmissions.org

Pham said generosity from the community so far has been outstanding.

“A lot of people have teamed up with us,” she said. “To see the significant impact in just a few days, it’s just incredible.”
