Arlington Reads, the adult literacy initiative of the Arlington Public Library, served 388 students in the 2017-18 school year.

Arlington Reads offers free classes in high school equivalency test preparation, English as a Second Language, citizenship and general adult education. Classes are offered in the Downtown Library, several library branches and other community centers such as the South Arlington Police Service Center.

Of the year's students, 288 attended 12 or more hours of class and made strides towards their personal goals. As part of Arlington Reads, 185 students attended English as a Second Language or Citizenship classes, and 103 took high school equivalency classes to prepare for the GED and other diploma tests.

"Our students have a wide array of needs and backgrounds, so we cater our classes to student needs," said Library Services Manager Melissa Jeffrey. "No matter what someone's goal or dream is, Arlington Reads is here to help."

Twenty three students made a measurable skill gain, either passing a subject test or moving to a more advanced class. Seven students passed their high school equivalency (GED) exam.

Free classes continue in the 2018-19 school year. Arlington Reads will also be offering new sessions including English for business professionals and a transitional course aimed to help students while they bridge to college or prepare for the workforce. Students who take at least 12 hours of classes may be eligible for integrated education and training programs in the medical, hospitality and IT fields.

The Arlington Public Library is a part of the Tarrant County Adult Education and Literacy Consortium, a collaborative effort of Tarrant County organizations working to provide educational and career opportunities for adults (18 years and older) who may be struggling due to limited education. Other TCAELC partners include the Texas Workforce Commission, Workforce Solutions for Tarrant County, Arlington ISD, Tarrant County College District, and other community organizations.
