This October, the Arlington community is invited to commemorate their departed loved ones at the Arlington Public Library's Día de los Muertos celebration. Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a holiday honoring family and friends who have passed on. Join the library for activities including crafts and a movie on Oct. 27, plus a community memorial project beginning in mid-October.
On Saturday, Oct. 27, come to the Downtown Library to take part in Día de los Muertos activities. Crafts and family fun will start at 1 p.m. in the [re]Brary Room on the first floor. Also at 1 p.m., teens can make a sugar skull-inspired craft in the Maker Space. The Library will show Disney's popular film Coco, which is set on Día de los Muertos, in the City Council Chamber and Community Center at 2 p.m.
Leading up to Día de los Muertos, the community is invited to leave a memento of their departed loved ones at a an ofrenda in the Downtown Library's lobby. An ofrenda, which patrons may recognize from Disney's Coco, features a collection of photos, favorite foods, flowers and other objects to honor and remember family members and friends after their deaths.
"Día de los Muertos is traditionally celebrated throughout Mexico and Latin America, but we are encouraging the whole community to get involved with our ofrenda," said Program Specialist Yuliana Aceves. "Everyone is welcome to celebrate and honor their loved ones."
To add a family member to the ofrenda, library patrons can leave a copy of their photo at the yellow help desks at the Downtown Library. Photos will not be returned, so please do not leave original copies. Patrons can make a copy of photos on Saturday, October 27 from 2 to 6 p.m. in the Genealogy and Local History department.
