Residents in Arlington's Parkview Addition are tending more than crops of crisp veggies in their beloved community garden.

They are also cultivating comradery, can-do spirit and a deep sense of community pride in their historical neighborhood, which was established in 1947 along East Abram Street in East Arlington. Generations of families have called Parkview home over the past 70 years. Today, more than two hundred homes make up the neighborhood, which bills itself as Arlington's first subdivision.

"We are diverse in cultures and we are diverse in generations," said Shirley Patterson, who has lived in Parkview more than 50 years and received a national award for her outstanding work toward the enhancement and preservation of the historic neighborhood.

The City of Arlington is proud to feature the Parkview Addition in this month's episode of Meet the Neighbors, a regularly scheduled web and video program that spotlights neighborhoods large and small across The American Dream City.

When the neighborhood identifies a need, its residents work together with the City and community partners to find a solution. The nearby General Motors Truck Assembly Plant, for example, donated $25,000 to help its neighbors create the community garden. Residents have also successfully applied for grants from the City's Neighborhood Matching Grant Program and the Arlington Tomorrow Foundation over the years for benches, entryway signs and other amenities.
