Arlington’s Street Maintenance Sales Tax Up for Renewal

Arlington voters will consider renewing the City's Street Maintenance Sales Tax in a special election this spring.

Arlington's Public Works and Transportation Department uses revenue generated by the quarter-cent Street Maintenance Sales Tax to provide ongoing repairs to concrete and asphalt streets throughout the 99-square-mile city. The sales tax, which currently generates between $14 million and $15 million a year, allows the City to patch thousands of potholes, seal cracks, resurface roadways and replace small sections of broken concrete streets to prevent further deterioration. These maintenance and rehabilitation efforts extend the lifespan of our vast street network and delay the need for rebuilds.

Arlington voters first authorized the Street Maintenance Sales Tax in September 2002 and reauthorized this funding source in 2006, 2010 and 2014. To date, approximately $180.9 million has been collected to improve city streets.

The current Street Maintenance Sales Tax is set to expire December 31, 2018. If reauthorized during the May 5, 2018, special election, the City's Street Maintenance Sales Tax would be extended until December 31, 2026.
