Arlington police held a morning briefing Friday before deploying additional officers to assist communities affected by Hurricane Harvey. Arlington police will begin patrolling 1,176 square miles alongside the Liberty County Sheriffs Office.
The Arlington Police Department's response to Hurricane Harvey became clearer on Thursday.
More officers are needed to join a massive search and rescue effort that includes National Guardsmen from multiple states, thousands of Texas guardsmen, active-duty troops and U.S. Coast Guard air and ground teams.
On Friday morning, two dozen additional officers deployed from Arlington as the federal government continues to assess the scale of historic flooding in southeast Texas.
These officers will join 19 others who deployed from Arlington on Aug. 28.
Lt. Paul Rodriguez will serve as the commander of this second team.
"Our mission is to provide assistance to our fellow law enforcement family currently working in the greater Houston area," Lt. Rodriguez said. "My team looks forward to being an extension of the Arlington community who wants to help families recover from the tragedy caused by floodwaters."
