AISD officials, community leaders and guests commemorated the opening of McNutt Elementary School with a dedication ceremony and open tour Saturday.

The elementary school, located at 3609 South Center Street, features 44 general classrooms, 8 collaborative spaces, 2 STEM labs, a media center and more. The 112,000-square-foot campus, which has a 900 student capacity, opened near Workman Junior High last fall. The school is part of the district's 2014 bond program.

The school is named for Sandy McNutt, who worked as a teacher, assistant principal and principal in the AISD for 29 years. She started as a teacher at Ditto Elementary from 1978 to 1987. McNutt became an assistant principal at Starrett Elementary in 1987, and, in 1990, she was an assistant principal at Moore Elementary when the school opened. McNutt was also the principal at Wood Elementary from 1992 to December 2007.
