Intersection Rebuild

The complete rebuild of the Abram and Collins streets intersection is expected to be finished by October.

The contractor underestimated the construction time for the rebuild, which started in June and was originally projected to be complete by August. The time extension on the project, which is part of the nearly $16 million rebuild of Abram Street between Collins Street and Stadium Drive, reflects a more reasonable, but still aggressive construction timeline.

The Abram and Collins intersection remains open to traffic but various lanes of both roads are being closed to accomplish the rebuild.

The Abram Street Rebuild (Cooper to City limits) project was approved by voters as part of the 2008 Bond Election. Due to the size and scope of such a project, it was split into three distinct projects.

Cooper Street to Collins Street

This project, which is currently in the design phase, runs through the heart of Downtown Arlington and will have a significant impact on the redevelopment of the area. This project will include rebuilding of water and sanitary sewer lines, drainage, landscaping, LED streetlights, stamped concrete pavers at intersections, LED pedestrian lighting, and parkway furnishings such as benches and trash receptacles. Construction is anticipated to begin in early spring 2019 and is expected to take 24 months to complete

Collins Street to SH360

  • Phase I (Stadium Drive to SH360): Consisted of $8.2 million in road and water infrastructure improvements, sidewalks, streetlights, and landscaping. This phase was completed in fall 2016. (might link to any video or story we did on this… pretty sure we did one or both).
  • Phase II (Collins Street to Stadium Drive): Includes rebuilding Abram Street between Collins Street and Stadium Drive as a five-lane, undivided arterial, enhancing and raising the bridge over Johnson Creek, widening sidewalks, improved parkway street lighting, storm drain improvements, and renewal of water and sanitary sewer infrastructure. This phase is expected to be completed later this fall.

SH360 to City Limits

This $8.6 million project, which was completed in December 2016, consisted of reconstructing Abram Street from a four-lane divided highway to a six-lane divided roadway including drainage, water, and sanitary sewer improvements.

Drivers looking for alternate routes around the construction area are encouraged to use Park Row Drive or Division Street for east/west travel and Center Street, Mesquite Street and Cooper Street for north/south travel.
