Becky and Troy Gillispie

We are proud to showcase Becky and Troy Gillispie as our dynamic Library volunteer duo for the City of Arlington in April! This married couple splits their time up between two branches, Becky is a Book Wrangler at the Lake Arlington Branch while Troy helps with programming at the Southwest Branch.

Becky became a part of our Library Story back in 2011 when her husband brought it to her attention about volunteering at the Lake Arlington Branch. During the day, Becky is a computer programmer and she visits the library regularly as a patron and volunteer. She has given over 570 hours of her time to help keep the Lake Arlington Branch workroom and shelves in tip top shape!

"Becky has been a staple at the Lake Arlington Branch Library", says Shana Munn, Public Service Coordinator. "Her attention to detail and wonderful work ethic allows library staff to be able to provide great customer service to our patrons. She has a good rapport with staff and volunteers and readily helps our newer volunteers as they learn the ropes. I am so thankful for her dedication to our library and our community!"

While attending an Art Festival at the library in 2014 with their grandchildren, Troy met librarian Dawn Reyes who mentioned that she had a chess club and could use help. It was through his wife that Dawn was able to make the connection with Troy. The Southwest Branch Chess Club consistently has 20-30 children in attendance and after two successful chess tournaments; the program has the potential to get even bigger. Medals are provided at the tournaments that Mr. Gillispie gets engraved, adding that special touch to each award.

Dawn Reyes can't say enough great things about Mr. Gillispie.

"For the past three years, Troy Gillispie has been a wonderful volunteer helping me host the Southwest Branch Chess Club. Because of his dedication we can offer chess club twice a month during the school year and in the summer when he has time off from his teaching job, he gives his time so we can offer chess every Monday in June and July."

When asked what they enjoy most about volunteering, Becky said she likes seeing the books. She enjoys seeing what is popular for her grandkids and for herself. Troy enjoys seeing the amount of kids who show up for chess and that this program is meeting a need and desire.

Thank you Becky and Troy Gillispie for all you do for the Arlington Public Library and our community!
