Arlington Public Library Offers

Once upon a time, a technology class offered at your local public library likely meant a free course in computer or internet basics. While those classes are still necessary and valuable to many individuals, advances in technology have opened the doors to allow the everyman to tinker in what was once an exclusive field.

The Arlington Public Library has opportunities for patrons to get hands-on technology experience in some of the newest and most exciting platforms available. From coding to robotics to 3D-printing, library technology programs can enhance personal, professional, and educational knowledge, as well as open doors to new interests for people of all ages.

Here's a look at some of the great technology programs happening this fall exclusively for our younger patrons. While some have already started, others are just gearing up, so mark your calendars!

Coding 101! - Designed for tweens ages 9-13, Coding 101 introduces young minds to the process of writing code through projects that integrate graphics and movement into a final product. No registration is required, but seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Alternate Mondays, October 10-November 21.

Girls Who Code - Exclusively for girls in grades 6-12, Girls Who Code is a unique program that seeks to inspire girls to actively pursue and explore computer science. This national program is being offered for the second time now at APL, and registration is currently open for the fall session, which begins September 29.

Mindstorm Robotics: 60 Minute Challenge - Using LEGO Mindstorms, participants ages 9-18 will have one hour to design, build, and program a robot to complete a given task. This weekly program is for students already familiar with LEGO Mindstorm Robotics and registration is required for each program. Mondays, through December 5.

LEGO Club Saturdays -LEGO Club participants ages 9-12 explore activities that range from building and programming LEGO models to creative writing using LEGO bricks and minifigures. Registration is required. Third Saturday of each month.

Tinker Lab - Using the mini computer Raspberry Pi, students ages 10-18 learn how to program this credit card-sized device to perform a number of tasks and control it remotely. Registration is required for the upcoming October 19 program.
