Arlington City Council Approves 10 Transit Buses for Handitran Services

The City of Arlington is enhancing its Handitran operation, with the purchase of 10 new diesel-fueled buses to replace units that have outlived their useful service lives.

Handitran offers safe and reliable door-to-door transportation services to senior citizens and residents with disabilities throughout The American Dream City.

The Arlington City Council approved this purchase in the amount of $730,600 at the evening session on Tuesday, January 12, 2016.

This is a one-time purchase that will initially be paid by the City. Approximately $621,010 of the cost will be reimbursed utilizing grant funds from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). The final cost to the City upon reimbursement will be $109,590.

Each bus will be equipped with a wheelchair lift and will comfortably accommodate both wheelchair-bound and mobility-impaired passengers.

Arlington's Handitran once again has federal operational funding, thanks to new legislation, known as the FAST Act, approved by Congress in December.

The latest "On the Clock" features a behind-the-scenes look at how Arlington's Handitran transportation services is managed and its importance to residents throughout the city.
