The City of Arlington Parks and Recreation Department, Arlington Master Composters and University of Texas at Arlington volunteers spent the day Saturday at various locations to clean-up the community.
The University's effort was a result of the "UTA Big Event" program, which is dedicated to a day of service and outreach. The event is a UT Arlington tradition and was held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 9.
More than 1,000 students participated in this event to give back to the community.
Arlington Master Composters and UTA volunteers, including the Association of Mexican American Students, also weeded flower beds and planted native grasses and flowers at Tierra Verde Golf Club and turned compost piles at the UTA compost site.
UT Arlington students, faculty, and community members also assisted Arlington Parks and Recreation Staff at the following locations for service in beautification: Bob Cooke Creek, O.S. Gray Park, SWNP, and High Oak Park. Projects included litter abatement, water well building around young trees, trail building , and park maintenance/privet removal.
"We had a great turnout and a good days work from the student volunteers. They, along with Parks Staff, chipped up the huge pile of privet brush that we had generated, the mulch will be used to help refresh our soft surface trails. They were awesome!" said Kevin Donovan with Friends of O.S. Gray park.
