The Arlington Chamber of Commerce announced today the recipients of the 2016 Arlington Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year Awards.

FOR-PROFIT CATEGORY

Mahrouq Enterprises International, Inc. (MEI) - Having started as an auto export business in 1999, MEI has grown to serve multiple business segments including: auto sales, auto rental, vehicle transportation, auto import, auto financing and real estate. Mr. Sam Mahrouq, founder of MEI, is a graduate of the University of Texas at Arlington and has given back to the community through the Boys & Girls Club, the Police Association and the Arlington Museum of Art.

NONPROFIT CATEGORY

Camp Thurman - Camp Thurman was established in 1969 as a nonprofit providing a summer day camp, afternoon-evening camps, all-year team building programs and community outreach programs. Annually serving the needs of close to 14,000, Camp Thurman has hosted leadership sessions for many regional businesses, school districts, universities, organizations and church groups.

VETERAN-OWNED CATEGORY

Godwin Chiropractic & Wellness Center - Dr. Kenyan Godwin served in the United States Air Force for eight years prior to completing his bachelors and chiropractic degrees. Combining his Air Force and subsequent training, Dr. Godwin has 16 years of experience in health & wellness. In both 2014 and 2015, he was recognized by Arlington Today Magazine as our area's "favorite chiropractor." Dr. Godwin is an active member of the community and the Chamber; recently being voted to serve as an Ambassador.

The Chamber's criteria for selection as a Small Businesses of the Year include growth, relevant innovation, and contributions toward building a sustainable community. The recipients will be honored at the May 5 "Spirit of America: 2016 Salute to Small Business" luncheon hosted by the Arlington Chamber of Commerce, the U.S. Small Business Administration and The North Texas Small Business Development Center.

"We are proud to recognize the significant accomplishments of our award recipients," stated Michael Jacobson, President and CEO of the Arlington Chamber of Commerce. "Our businesses of the year are managed by bright and highly motivated people who are committed to superior service and making a difference in the lives of people and the entire community."

The "Salute to Small Business" luncheon will be held at the Sheraton Arlington Hotel commencing promptly at 11:30 a.m. The ceremony will be emceed by local television celebrity Scott Murray. Scott hosts Talk Street on NBC 5, is a co-host on the Texas Daily show on KTXD-TV, while also hosting The Scott Murray Show about "leadership and philanthropy" every Sunday night from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on radio 570 KLIF. He is also a published author of two books (Whatever It Takes and Bring Out the BEST!).

Businesses are encouraged to participate in the "Salute to Small Business," as both public and private small businesses representing 72 counties from North Texas will be honored at the event. The U.S. Small Business Administration will recognize the Young Entrepreneur of the Year, Exporter of the Year, Women in BusinessChampion of the Year, Minority Small Business of the Year, and others. Winners are from Dallas, Fort Worth, Wichita Falls, Denton, Richardson and other communities.
