What is now a minor inconvenience could spur major benefits in the future as Arlington is undergoing significant road work to make the area more pedestrian-friendly.
This portion of the Abram Street Rebuild Project, which costs $8.1 million, is set to ultimately enhance mobility in the area, drivers should expect delays while it is being completed.
On Friday, Oct. 9, a major traffic switch will occur during this phase of the construction project on Abram Street between Stadium Drive and SH360.
According to the Public Works Department, the switch will move the current two-way traffic from the eastbound lanes of Abram to the westbound lanes (new concrete pavement).
As a result, the two eastbound lanes will be closed, leaving one lane of traffic in each direction on the westbound lanes for approximately seven months.
During this phase, the contractor will:
- remove existing asphalt and concrete paving, curbs, sidewalks and driveways
- prepare subgrade, place new concrete paving of the south main-lanes, deceleration lanes, turn-lanes, driveways, sidewalks & retaining walls
- install new street lights, median enhancements, plantings and irrigation.
Drivers, residents and business owners will enjoy the revitalized roads, underground drainage, water and sanitary renewals, streetlights and landscaping once construction is completed in 2016.
This project is connected to the Arlington City Council's priority of improving regional mobility, which will ultimately make the transportation connections within and beyond the City's borders more efficient.
Overall, the City will have $83.4 million in capital street construction in progress by early 2016.
