Students and Parents Prepare for Youth Education Success Summit

On Saturday, Oct. 11, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., more than 300 students and their parents are expected to attend the 11th Annual Youth Education Success Summit at UT Arlington. The YES Summit will take place in Nedderman Hall. This event is sponsored by the Xi Theta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and a number of community partners.

Now in its 11th year, the YES Summit provides students in grades seven through twelve an opportunity to network with peers, and participate in a variety of workshops on higher education, career, health and financial success. Registered participants also receive breakfast and lunch. This event is free.

This year's Summit workshop topics will explore topics such as college preparation and entrance requirements, financial aid and college scholarship processes, financial literacy, test anxieties, social media, campus security, bullying, and career goal setting.

"At the YES Summit, we're providing students and their parents with the resources that are needed to ensure they are on track to meeting their goals of graduating from high school and then preparing for higher education," said Xi Theta Omega Chapter President Lisa Thompson.

In addition to workshops for students, a panel has been assembled for parents to discuss the state of education in America.

This event is made possible by a number of community partners including UT Arlington, Trio Pre-College Programs, Arlington ISD Dropout Prevention Program, Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Texas and the Nu Pi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

"We are proud to be a part of an effort that involves many segments of our community uniting for the common goal of helping our youth to succeed," Thompson said.

Just in time for the holidays, volunteers will also be collecting canned goods to benefit food pantries at local charities.
