UTA-Basketball

UT Arlington coach Scott Cross couldn't help but notice the contribution of his freshmen in the Mavericks' season-opening win at Bradley. All he has to do is look at the box score.

The four freshmen who suited up- forward Kevin Hervey, guar Erick Neal, guard Kaelon Wilson and forward Julian Harris- accounted for 34 points, nine rebounds and six assists in 62 combined minutes in the 86-75 road victory.

"It was a great all-around team effort from our guys, but you have to put the freshmen at the top of the list in terms of individual performances,"; Cross. "They were so productive during that Bradley game. It was almost off the charts how productive they were. If we can get close to that production throughout the season we're going to be in great shape.";

Hervey started and scored 13 points, knocking down three 3-pointers and grabbing seven rebounds. Neal and Wilson each scored nine points, while Harris had three rebounds and two assists in 12 minutes.

Overall, four scored in double figures at Bradley with sophomore guard Drew Charles leading the way with a career-high 14 points. Junior guard Johnny Hill scored 13 in his first career game for UTA, while senior guard Jamel Outler added 13 points.

UTA shot 12-20 (60 percent) on 3-pointers at Bradley. Outler, Charles and Neal each made at least two from downtown. The Mavericks also limited Bradley to 38.2-percent shooting.

"If we play like we did against Bradley I think we will be fine in just about every game we play on our schedule,"; Cross said. "That's what we have to do. That's the formula for us to be successful and if we stick to it we'll be just fine.";

The Mavericks open up the home portion of their schedule Tuesday night at College Park Center against Buffalo. The Bulls are 1-1 after opening the season with a win over South Dakota State before falling at Kentucky. Tip is 7:30 p.m.

Justin Moss is averaging 16.5 points and 9.5 rebounds for Buffalo. Jerry Skeete is averaging 10 points and shooting 57 percent.

"They're a very good team,"; Cross said. "They were down five to Kentucky in the second half, so that shows what they're capable of doing. They're a pretty complete team. They have good guard play, a guy inside who really rebounds and a post player who can shoot it. They do a great job defensively.";
