It’s Springtime in Texas, Be Prepared

Flooding and other severe weather events can occur at any time in Texas, so it is important for you to be prepared and stay alert!

Items for emergency supply kit:

  • Drinking water
  • Food that requires no refrigeration or cooking
  • Cash
  • Medications and first aid supplies
  • Clothing and toiletries
  • Battery-powered radio
  • Flashlights
  • Extra batteries
  • Important documents: insurance papers, medical records, bank account numbers

Have an evacuation plan for your family and pets:

  • Identify places to go
  • Identify alternative travel routes
  • Plan what to do with your pets
  • Fill your car with gas
  • Discuss evacuation plans with your family
  • Decide where family members will meet if separated
  • Designate a contact person in case family members are separated during flood event

Protect your property

  • Move valuables and furniture to higher levels
  • Move hazardous materials - paint, oil, pesticides and cleaning supplies - to higher levels
  • Disconnect electrical appliances
  • Bring outside possessions indoors or tie them down securely (includes lawn furniture, garbage cans or other movable objects)
  • Seal outside vents to basements to prevent flooding

Be alert!

  • Monitor your surroundings
  • Monitor your local television and radio stations for weather alerts or monitor the NOAA Weather Radio or go to www.weather.gov for current weather alerts
  • If a Flash Flood Warning is issued in your area, climb to safety immediately
  • Flash floods develop quickly. Do not wait until you see rising water.
  • Get out of low areas subject to flooding.
  • If driving, do not drive through flooded roadways!
