UTA Top Choice for Transfers

The University of Texas at Arlington ranks first among the top 10 U.S. colleges and universities with the most new transfer students, according to the U.S. News & World Report Short List.

The list, based on data collected during the fall 2012 semester by the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, looked at degree-seeking transfer students at more than 1,193 schools.

UT Arlington topped the list with 8,649 new transfer students during that year among four-year public universities and national universities on the list.

The other schools had an average of 481 newly enrolled transfer students during the same time period.

Ronald Elsenbaumer, UT Arlington provost and vice president for academic affairs, said the ranking demonstrates that UT Arlington is a University of choice for degree-seeking transfer students. Last year, about 60 percent of new, incoming students transferred from another institution, mostly from regional community colleges.

"UT Arlington is an institution where excellence and access go hand in hand," Elsenbaumer said. "We work hard every day to ensure that students who begin their academic careers at community colleges or other institutions choose courses aligned with their ultimate degree goals. And we pledge to provide them every tool they need to pursue their academic dreams."

Of the 10 universities with the high number of transfer students, most were located in California, Florida and Texas, including: Arizona State University, University of Central Florida, California State University (Fullerton), University of Houston, Florida International University, California State University (Northridge), California State University (Long Beach), University of South Florida and University of North Texas.
