UTA Hosts Power Sports Clinic

This past Saturday UT-Arlington helped continue its tradition of offering sports that are accessible to everyone in UT-Arlington`s first Power Wheelchair Sports Day.

The Movin' Mavs Adaptive Sports and Recreation Program, in collaboration with USA Power Soccer Association and Camp Craig Allen, helped bring a day of exciting activities for people in power wheelchairs.

"Our program here at UTA is a historic program started by Coach [Jim] Hayes as a way to encourage people with disabilities to look beyond their disability and basically be all they can be," said Movin` Mavs Head Coach Doug Garner.

The camp showcased the sports of Boccia, Power Hockey and Power Soccer. Officials who are internationally certified have helped to bring these adaptive sports to a population that the Movin` Mavs Adaptive Sports Program has not worked with in the past.

"Our philosophy is that sport is the vehicle to motivate people to get up and be active," says Garner.
