New Senior Living Facility

Arlington City Council members gave the go-ahead Tuesday night to build a new senior living community in the city.

Arlington resident Thean Lye Koay, along with three other nurses, will build a 100-unit Highland Senior Living community on East Arbrook Boulevard near Collins Street. Koay and his partners currently own home health and hospice care businesses in the area.

Construction is expected to begin this spring, with the facility scheduled to open its doors in 2015. The new facility will employ 100-150 people.

"With the opening of the Highland Senior Living community, the city will have base services for its seniors," said Koay. "Most of the people living in retirement communities are there due to health issues. Most facilities are owned by larger entities and don't deal with health issues because they don't have the nurses to support this."

With the ownership group featuring extensive health care experience, Koay believes the residents will benefit in a way that individuals living at larger facilities may not experience.

"We want keep our residents well, active and independent so they can stay there for a long time."
