The Arlington Police and Fire Departments will face off in the annual Guns and Hoses charity hockey game on February 22. All proceeds will benefit Random Acts of Kindness, a national organization of firefighters that raises money for the communities they serve.

According to Arlington Fire Paramedic Rob Constantine, "the Guns and Hoses charity event is going strong after ten years, making it the longest running charity event in North Texas. Firefighters don't have a lot of money, but what they do have is time."

"This special event provides an opportunity to do a little bit for someone else," said Arlington Police Officer Sgt. James McRobbie. While the police officers are committed to ending the fire department's two-game winning streak, Sgt. McRobbie said the best part of the game is "beating up the firefighters."

Paramedic Jason Arias remembers the competition's humble beginnings. "When the game started, there was nothing more than a few guys in roller skates," Arias said. "Now they are on ice and the StarCenter can barely hold the fans of the game," he said.

Last year's game drew more than 400 people and raised more than $15,000 for a firefighter whose wife was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Since its inception, this event has raised more than $30,000 for various causes in Arlington. Past recipients include Muscular Dystrophy Research, the Women's Shelter of Arlington, Save Haven of Tarrant County, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Boys and Girls Clubs of Arlington, as well as our very own firefighters and police officers.

The game is at The Dr Pepper StarCenter in Euless, at 5 p.m. Admission is $5. While at the game, you can also take part in a silent auction that raises money for Arlington residents battling illness, disability and poverty.
