Drivers should expect minor detours and road closures when the next phase of the Union Pacific track renewal project returns to Arlington in January.

This project is expected to begin in Dallas on January 2 and Union Pacific estimates the track renewal project should reach Arlington on January 16 and last through January 24.

During this phase of the project, crews will replace the south mainline rail, crossties and ballast on the 13-mile stretch of rail which runs parallel to Division Street. Concrete panels at each railroad crossing will be renewed as well.

Don't expect the same disruptions Arlington residents and drivers experienced during the 2013 project that rolled through the city.

So, how will it be different this time?

According to Union Pacific, local crews will be used to complete the work, thus eliminating the need to employ the extensive train system used in 2013. Without the TRT 909, the noise coming from the work zone shouldn't be a major concern to residents. Trains passing by work crews will blow their horns for safety reasons, however, even in the quiet zones.

Also, as the project moves across the city, only two railroad crossings will be closed at a time. This will help minimize the impact on northbound and southbound traffic. Crews are expected to work from 7:00 p.m. to 4 a.m. each day.

"Working these hours not only increases the efficiency of the operation, it decreases the duration of the project," said Mindy Carmichael, Assistant Director of Public works and Transportation.

Initially, it will require the closure of the following crossings for approximately two days: Center Street/Mesquite Street, Cooper Street/Davis Street, Great Southwest Parkway/Bowen Road and Collins. Two roads should open as two more are closed.
