Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) mobilizes millions of youth from over 100 countries to improve their communities through service. It remains one of the largest service events of its kind.
On Saturday, April 27, youth groups from area schools, faith-based and nonprofit organizations will make a difference in Arlington when they scatter throughout the city to paint houses, pick up trash, remove debris, plant gardens, tutor, and fund-raise.
Groups from schools like Young Junior High School and Sam Houston High School to churches such as Cornerstone Baptist Church are slated to participate in projects addressing needs such as health, hunger and environmental conservation issues.
UT Arlington's Big Event, also observed on April 27, is expected to include an additional 1,000 college participants making a difference through service. Click here for a list of Big Event Project Sites.
The Juan Seguin High School Latin Club and Student Council will sponsor its annual Walk It Out, a 5k fun run/walk at Veteran's Park benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and March of Dimes.
After all the work is done, everyone is invited to join the City of Arlington at a celebration from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 at the Levitt Pavilion in downtown Arlington. Free hot dogs and drinks! The celebration will also feature the Paul Demer Band and recognize event sponsors and youth award recipients.
Trophies will be awarded to individuals and youth service groups in three grade level categories. Winning groups also walk away with grant funds for their upcoming service projects. The Alliance For Youth will also announce the winners of the Jerry Cooper Service Learning Scholarship, which is open to Arlington area high school seniors.
The Arlington Alliance for Youth remains a lead agency for Global Youth Service Day. GYSD Chairperson Sheila Sutton said the award competition rewards "creativity and community impact."
Interviews with youth groups will be conducted at the Levitt by AISD-TV, which will serve as a good summary of what all the youth groups accomplished on this special day.
