Jim and Kathy Mazza are a husband/wife team that has volunteered with the Arlington Public Library System since October 2011. They saw a sign about volunteer opportunities at their local library and decided to sign up for an orientation. Jim is retired from a previous career working on jet engines with Pratt & Whitney and Kathy worked with Child Protective Services as a training assistant. Since Jim likes working with his hands and fixing things, he is a huge asset to the library system as a Book Doctor. He is able to use his skills on high demand items that need a little TLC and repair. He also helps maintain the large amounts of donated books that collect in the workrooms. Kathy is a Book Wrangler and spends her volunteer time improving customer and staff services by getting the vast collection of items back on the shelves.
This husband/wife team volunteers 12-20 hours each per month, spending their time at the Southwest Branch Library near their home and they also travel across town to the Northeast Branch Library. They are always a welcome sight for staff. "Our wonderful volunteers Jim and Kathy are a joy to work with. They are always polite, hardworking and pleasant. Jim can repair any book we give him and Kathy is a wiz at shelving books. Kathy keeps our shelves in good shape and Jim keeps the books in good shape. They are the most dedicated volunteers we have,' says Tyrone Moore, Public Service Coordinator for the Southwest Branch Library.
The Mazza's spend much of their time hanging out with their grandchildren. Kathy enjoys scrapbooking and they both enjoy reading. When asked why they volunteer, Jim said, "I like the freedom of being able to come and go when we want and we are helping the community at the same time.'
