Fall is just around the corner and August is the month to register for Arlington's sports leagues! Youth leagues will be offered for coach pitch, t-ball, inline hockey and outdoor soccer, while adult leagues include basketball, flag football, inline hockey, kickball, softball and volleyball.

"This is our busy time of the year as folks start to think about upcoming activities for the fall," said Wendy Parker, Athletics Director for Arlington Parks and Recreation. "Our sports leagues offer a great outlet for both adults and youth who want to stay active."

Last year more than 3,800 youth participants and 1,436 adult teams played in a Parks and Recreation sports league. League participation was up in 2011 and is expected to increase again during 2012.

Bill Gilmore, Assistant Director for Park Community Programs, attributes the participant increase to people's desire for a healthier lifestyle. "Over the last few years we have seen our sports participation figures increase on an annual basis as people put fitness at the top of their priority list," he said.

Youth league fees start at $65 for an eight game season which includes one practice per week and a game on Saturday. All teams have a volunteer coach and all games have certified officials. Youth sports participants receive a jersey and an individual award at the end of the season.

Adult league fees vary by sport. The playing season consists of eight games. During registration team coaches select the night of the week they would like to participate. Adult leagues are offered six days a week throughout Arlington. "Our adult softball leagues fill quickly on Friday and Sunday nights at both locations, Parker said. Team awards are given to the 1st and 2nd place team each season.
