The Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation and Arlington Independent School District are proud to announce the 2012 Richard Greene Scholarship Recipients in honor of former Arlington Mayor Greene, who served when Rangers Ballpark in Arlington was being planned and opened.

Each of the six junior Arlington ISD students will receive a $10,000 scholarship upon graduation from high school for being a Richard Greene Scholar.

During their senior years, scholars will participate in a rigorous program that features internships at a variety of locations including: City of Arlington, Mission Arlington, the North Texas Council of Governments, Arlington Chamber of Commerce, the University of Texas at Arlington, River Legacy Nature Center, Arlington ISD, and the Texas Rangers.

This year's scholars will also complete service projects and leadership training to help familiarize them with organizations and individuals in Arlington that benefit the community.

"The Richard Greene Scholar program provides a tremendous opportunity for a student from each of our high schools,"Arlington ISD Superintendent Jerry McCullough said. "In addition to the scholarship, the leadership training the students receive through the program will prove invaluable to them far beyond their high school and college careers."

Richard Greene Scholars are chosen by the Texas Rangers Richard Greene Scholar Selection Committee. The committee selects one student from each of the district's six high schools based on a minimum 3.0 GPA, leadership, extracurricular activities, community service and in-person interviews.

"The students selected for the Richard Greene Scholars program consistently impress us with their academic accomplishments, significant community service, leadership, and commitment to Arlington. We are proud to support the educational dreams of such outstanding young people in a program that involves and impacts all of Arlington," commented Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation President Jim Sundberg.

The Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation has pledged $1 million for the Richard Greene Scholars Program over 20 years.

In 2010, the University of Texas at Arlington committed to providing full tuition scholarships to any Richard Greene Scholar who chooses to attend the university.
