The City of Arlington will break ground on the long-awaited 10 and Under courts at the Arlington Tennis Center (ATC) on Saturday. Construction is expected to be complete in late August or early September of this year.

City Council approved a contract for construction on April 24 with JDC Construction to construct six smaller tennis courts the ATC, located at 500 Mayfield Rd. The construction of the tennis courts is being supported by grants from the Arlington Tomorrow Foundation and United States Tennis Association.

10 and Under tennis started at ATC in 2008. The program will now have permanent courts for children aged 10 and below to learn the game in an environment that is more conducive to having fun while learning the skills to be a tennis player.

"With the addition of these new courts, Arlington youth will be able to play on courts that are more applicable to their abilities," said Lance Helm, ATC Head Pro. "This, in turn, will provide an environment for the children to have fun while developing skills."

Helm has been the pro at ATC since 2007 and is a recent recipient of the Lloyd Sessions Educational Merit Award for his dedication to youth and tennis.

Residents can sign up for summer programs now. Morning camps for juniors, evening classes for adults and juniors, drills and recreational leagues are all available for registration.

ATC has 20 lighted outdoor courts, men's and women's locker rooms and a full-service pro shop. The center offers classes and lessons for all ages and levels of play and the pro shop carries the latest in equipment, along with a wide variety of tennis-themed gifts and collections and stringing service.

Special offers on programs and equipment will be available on the day of the event. For more information, visit the Arlington Tennis Center website, and don't forget to like us on Facebook!
