About OEM

The City of Arlington is exposed to many hazards that have the potential for disrupting the community, causing damage, and creating casualties. Natural hazards include fire, floods, severe weather, and tornadoes. Threats of terrorism are also a consideration in preparation and response. Additionally, the city faces threats of hazardous materials accidents involving the transportation, shipment, and storage of hazardous materials. To address these potential threats, the Office of Emergency Management publishes the City of Arlington Emergency Management Plan (EMP). This plan provides the framework upon which the city prepares for, responds to, and performs its emergency response functions during times of natural or man-made emergencies. The plan is based on the four phases of Emergency Management which are:

Mitigation – Activities that reduce or eliminate the probability of disaster or damage.
Preparedness – Activities that government, organizations, and individuals develop to save lives and property.
Response – Actions that minimize the loss of life and property and provide emergency assistance.
Recovery – Short and long-term activities that restore city operations and help return the community to a normal state. When the City of Arlington faces an emergency and the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is activated, the Office of Emergency Management works with appropriate city departments, as well as, various volunteer, private, state and federal agencies to respond quickly and effectively to provide continuity of services to the public.
