Chosen Scents Owner and Employee at Parks Arlington

From a hobby to a successful small business looking for their first storefront location, Chosen Scents & Gifts, has grown considerably since the business first started in 2013. That year, Christopher Coffer Sr. officially turned his love of scents and candle-making into a business to earn some extra money for his 10 kids, Christopher Jr, Christion, Christiania, Christina, Christal, Christain, Christaivis, Keerstain, Marcel, Christof, Zion Coffer. The business was a perfect match.

“I was just making them for the house,” said Coffer. “But then people kept telling me they smelled really good, and they lasted a long time. I started selling them out of a barber shop, and then someone asked for a case of it, so it became a real business.”

Chosen Scents & Gifts made Arlington its home four years ago, when they began selling out of a kiosk at the Parks Mall at Arlington. They have grown to include candles, perfumes, cologne, essential oils, candle oils, and more. They currently have two locations, one in Arlington and another in Louisiana, and they are searching for their first storefront with space for manufacturing in the back. They have three employees, but the whole family takes turns pitching in to help with the growing business.

“I really let my kids choose the scents. My girls like to sit there and mix and match,” Coffer laughed. “If they all agree, it becomes a new scent.” Coffer added that Chosen Scents & Gifts has all the normal scents that people love, like vanilla. He and his girls will make small little changes to the favorites to make them their own.

Chosen Scents & Gifts has a few holiday specials they are running, including 40% off if you buy three or more candles, a 5% discount on fragrances and they are also selling gift baskets.

The City’s Planning and Development Service Department is also hosting Customer Appreciation Week during the same time and will be providing refreshments and bottled water for the customers visiting the Small Business Promotion table.

The City of Arlington is highlighting minority-owned and/or women-owned small businesses throughout 2022. Canales Furniture, another Small Business of Arlington, who has grown substantially in the last few years, wants to give back to the community and is sponsoring this program with the Planning & Development Services Department for the year 2022. In their new headquarters at 102 E. I-20 Highway, they have dedicated a training room for their growing community, including free English-speaking classes, citizenship classes, and teaching small businesses on how to utilize social media as a marketing tool.
