Initially scheduled to be completed in October 2022, work on the project was delayed due to unanticipated issues during the relocation of franchise utilities infrastructure. The project is now scheduled to be completed in May 2023. To date, the contractor has completed the installation of 9,750 linear feet of water lines, 4,000 linear feet of sanitary sewer lines, 4,000 linear feet of storm drainage infrastructure, and other associated infrastructure.

Upon completion of the underground infrastructure improvements, the contractor will begin roadway paving operations. Roadway work scheduled to be completed includes:

  • Reconstructing Harris Road from a two-lane asphalt roadway to a three-lane concrete roadway with an estimated useful life of 50 years
  • Modifications to the intersection of Harris Road and Cooper Street and installation of new traffic signals
  • Construction of sidewalks and ADA compliant pedestrian ramps
  • Street light improvements
  • Pavement markings

To minimize traffic congestion and increase public and contractor safety, Harris Road, from Cooper Street to Calender Road, will remain closed to all eastbound traffic. The road will remain open to westbound traffic. As construction progresses and the need for certain types of heavy equipment and materials changes, city staff will reevaluate whether the roadway can be safely reopened to two-way traffic.

Harris Road is included as a major collector on the City’s Thoroughfare Development Plan (TDP). The TDP is a long-range plan that identifies the location and type of roadway facilities needed to meet projected long-term within the City of Arlington. Arlington voters approved funding for this project as part of the 2014 Bond Election Street Improvements Package. The improvements planned align with the City Council’s priorities to Enhance Regional Mobility and Champion Great Neighborhoods.
