Brave Combo

Levitt Pavilion Arlington’s free fall concert series kicks off this Friday! This weekend's lineup includes everything from country funk to alternative rock. Here's this weekend's lineup.

Friday, Sept. 3, 7 p.m.
Brave Combo with Opening Act Gary Devlin

For all of their 40 years, there has been no other band quite like the two-time Grammy-winning Texas-based Brave Combo. The songs in their groove-infused repertoire range from revved-up Russian dirge to tripped-out Latin cha-cha and rockified old-school lounge to lowdown Tex-Mex hippie shake with a little trancey Greek circle swing to the obvious stuff, like polka, twist, samba, hora and the heaviest, most demonic Hokey Pokey ever. In Brave Combo’s world, up is down, down is up, uncool is cooler than cool, and everyone likes it that way. Perfect for dancing or listening, Brave Combo is where Jimi Hendrix and Lawrence Welk meet up with Perez Prado and The Boston Pops, conducted by Screaming Jay Hawkins. Brave Combo was the first band to play at the Levitt Pavilion when it opened Oct. 10, 2008.

Gary Devlin, a lifelong guitar player has been composing and writing songs along his musical journey. In 2010, he began to seriously study the art and craft of songwriting and he released his debut CD, “Pick Your Hearts Desire,” in 2016. A “feel-good” pop-rock vibe, more music is on the way. Gary lives in Arlington, Texas.

Saturday, Sept. 4, 7 p.m.
The Texas Gentlemen with Opening Act Joshua Fleming of the Vandoliers

Prepare your eardrums to be hit with everything from woozy, brass-fueled New Orleans-style jazz to slinky, chicken-scratch country funk to lushly orchestrated pop-soul balladry – that’s The Texas Gentlemen. While the Gentlemen’s sound is clearly steeped in the classic roots, rock and pop music of the ‘60s and ‘70s, there’s a dreamy, spacey and occasionally progressive element to what they do that seems to detach the music from belonging to any particular place and time. Add in elements of funk, soul, country, R&B, Southern rock, gospel and essentially any other style that catches their musically omnivorous ears for an expansive, detailed approach to arrangements that see songs adorned with all manner of horns, strings and heavenly background vocals. The Gents newest recording, their second full-length effort, is Floor It!!!

Joshua Fleming is the lead singer and guitarist for the Vandoliers, the next wave of Texas music. The Vandoliers is a six-piece Dallas-Fort Worth group channels all that makes this vast state unique: tradition, modernity, audacity, grit, and—of course—size. Forever puts it all together for an enthralling ride down a fresh Lone Star highway.

Sunday, Sept. 5, 7 p.m.
Gina Chavez with Opening Act Almost Jaded

In an industry that looks to define artists, Gina Chavez refuses to fit into a box. From features on NPR’s Tiny Desk to Brené Brown to Colbert, this queer, bilingual, genre-bending musician has become a force to be reckoned with. Gina — a truly independent recording artist — saw the fruits of her labor pay off last year where she was not only nominated for a Latin Grammy but was tapped to open the Latin Grammy premiere show with her first all-Spanish release, “La Que Manda.” Now, the Texas native can be seen everywhere as one of the faces of LifeWTR’s #LifeUnseen campaign — with her own bottle and a commercial airing nationwide. Gina has harnessed her power to make space for those who can’t be defined. From her half-Mexican, half-Swiss German raices, to her faith as a married Catholic lesbian, to her music, which she sings in both English and Spanish, the Latinx pop-rock artist is unapologetically herself — and wants that for others. Someone has to open the door, and Gina Chavez is doing just that.

Almost Jaded is an alternative rock/pop trio whose groovy, emotive music is enjoyed by any and every audience. In August of 2018, Amy Kathleen (singer/songwriter) and Jared Sullivan (bass guitar/cello) met at an open mic at record store Truth Vinyl in Arlington, Texas. After acquiring a cello after a decade of not having played the instrument, Jared began accompanying Amy on her original songs. As they began performing across the DFW area, they secured an acoustic slot at Richardson’s 2019 Cottonwood Arts Festival. At the festival, Jared ran into his friend Mac Bain (drummer), who he had not seen since they attended Berklee College of Music together ten years prior. The three formed what is now Almost Jaded.
