Children at Arlington Public Library locations

Days are getting sunnier, school is almost over, and the Arlington Public Library is getting ready for another fun season of our Summer Reading Challenge! Join us to ‘Discover Your Story’ with weekly events, book challenges, and prize drawings for all ages. Our Summer Reading Challenge begins June 1 and runs through July 31 at all library locations.

Celebrate the beginning of SRC at our Summer Programs Kickoff on Saturday, May 22 from 10 a.m. to noon at the East Library and Recreation Center. We will have games, crafts, and other activities for all ages. This come-and-go event will have activities inside and outside. We encourage all participants to practice social distancing during the program.

Summer Reading Challenge is a great way to stay busy and have fun this summer. Each week will feature manageable but fun goals, designed by librarians specifically for each age group. Read a book, try a literacy activity, make a craft, interact with family and friends, and more! Don’t forget to fill out a prize entry form for each week.

  • Children can complete any four boxes in a row on the Kids Challenge card. When they get four in a row, visit your nearest library location to get a book prize.
  • Teens can complete any four boxes in a row on the Teen Challenge card. When you get four in a row, drop your card off and be entered for the weekly prize drawing!
  • Adults: Every time you read one book or attend one program (virtually or in-person), submit an entry form online to be entered into a weekly drawing for a gift pack.

“Reading and engaging in activities over the summer helps prevent learning loss,” Program Management and Community Engagement administrator Stacy Garcia said. “The benefits aren’t just for youth and students. We hope adults will explore new books and experiences with us as well.”

Summer is always a busy time at the Library and this year will be no exception. With a mix of free online and in-person events, families can pick the level of participation that’s best for them. In-person events will have careful safety precautions in place, including social distancing and limits on the number of participants. Many events require registration but all are free. Don’t miss this season of summer fun with the Arlington Public Library. Sign up for an event today or browse through our catalog to find a fun summer read to complete your challenge!
