Unity Council

The Unity Council will hold its next virtual public meeting, co-hosted by the United Way of Tarrant County and the Greater Arlington Chamber of Commerce, at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1, 2021.

The mission of the 29-member Unity Council is to gather community input, research best practices and recommend strategies that the City of Arlington could implement to promote and encourage greater equity across our community.

The Unity Council’s work to create a racial equity plan is part of the City’s commitment to equality, inclusion, and the elimination of institutional racism and other forms of discrimination in its policies and practices.

In the interest of public health, the Feb. 1 Unity Council meeting will be held virtually to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The meeting will be televised and streamed online. Residents are invited to listen in to brief updates from the Unity Council’s subcommittees on policing, economic disparities and housing and may also provide their input on racial equity in Arlington during the meeting.

The questions that will be focused on during the meeting include:

• How do you feel about the death of George Floyd and Black Lives Matter protests for racial justice?
• Is racism a serious problem in Arlington? If so, what are some examples?
• What are some long term and short-term solutions for addressing racial and ethnic disparities in Arlington?
• What else would you like to say about race and ethnic relations in Arlington?
• What are the differences in quality of life within the different areas in Arlington? Which is the least desirable to live in and why?

Members of the public who wish to speak can send an email to [email protected] to register at any time until 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 1.

Residents can also call 833-268-8354; Conference ID – 360-629-958# starting at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 1 to register to speak. City staff will then call members of the public who register to speak at the appropriate time.

When registering by email, please include your name and address for the record, as well as a telephone number, and the listed agenda item that you would like to speak on.

The meetings can be viewed live on the City's website at www.arlingtontx.gov/city_hall/departments/broadcast or through your local cable provider municipal channel.
