The Arlington Police Department responded to a major crash in the eastbound lanes in the 5000 block of West I.H. 20 on Friday, January 8, 2021 at 10:32 p.m.

Investigators determined that a pickup had been involved in a previous crash and become disabled partially in the inside lane and shoulder of the freeway. Another motorist stopped in the inside lane to render assistance after witnessing the first crash. Two adult occupants exited the pickup and were standing on the inside shoulder.

A third passenger vehicle was traveling eastbound approaching the stopped vehicles. The driver of the third passenger vehicle attempted to take evasive action when the driver realized the lane was occupied with a stopped car. This driver drove to the left onto the inside shoulder and struck both pedestrians who had been standing outside of their vehicle.

A 43-year old woman was pronounced deceased at the scene. The other pedestrian, an adult woman, was transported to a local hospital with severe injuries.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office will identify the deceased once next of kin have been notified.

The Traffic Unit reminds the motoring public to attempt to get vehicles completely out of the roadway, when possible, and to exit vehicles safely and stand as far away from the main lanes and shoulders as possible when stranded on a freeway. Officers recommend possibly standing on the opposite side of a barrier wall or guardrail if available while awaiting public safety responders.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the pedestrians is cooperating with investigators.
