Free Virtual Classes Aim to Help Residents Save Water

Two water-efficient gardening classes co-sponsored by Arlington Water Utilities and the Arlington Public Library in July have been moved online to make sure residents will still have access to the events while maintaining safe social distancing practices.

The two free virtual classes are:

  • Care and Repair DIY Sprinkler Workshop, from 10-11 a.m., Saturday, July 18. This class is presented by Tarrant Regional Water District and focuses on home sprinkler systems – from minor repairs to learning how to program your sprinkler for the best results. The class will be taught by irrigation expert Dr. Dotty Woodson. You can register for the online class at After the presentation, stick around a for a live question and answer session.
  • Birds, Bees and Butterflies: Gardening for Wildlife from 6-8 p.m., Thursday, July 23. The class is being presented by Water University at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research Center – Dallas. Learn ways to attract and provide hab¬itat for butterflies…and other animals that bring your landscape to life with activity. The event will be held through a Zoom call. Arlington Water Utilities will be giving the first 25 residents who sign up for and attend the Birds, Bees and Butterflies: Gardening for Wildlife virtual class a $20 coupon toward the purchase of a UPlantIt Pollinator Garden from AgriLife Water University this fall.

The UPLantIt garden is normally sold for $95. It comes with 32 starters plants of 14 different varieties in individual 3-inch pot and covers up to 125 sq. ft It was designed by two AgriLife Water University garden cultivation experts. Gardens like the UPLantIt Pollinator Garden support City of Arlington initiatives like participation in the National Wildlife Federation Mayors’ Monarch Pledge and Arlington’s Bee City USA designation.
