Your Money In Action

The City of Arlington is making improvements to the water, sanitary sewer and roadway infrastructure in the 900 block of East Sanford Street, adjacent to the Arlington ISD’s future Fine Arts Center and Athletics Complex. The project area includes East Sanford Street, from South Collins Street to AT&T Way.

On Thursday, May 7, Arlington Water Utilities in-house construction crews began replacing water and sewer mains in advance of an upcoming street improvement project. Current 6-inch water and sewer mains buried under the street are nearly 50 years old.

Pipe-bursting technology will be used to speed the installation of new 8-inch mains and minimize disruption. In pipe-bursting projects, new water and sewer lines are pulled through existing lines, breaking up the existing lines along the way. Replacing the water and sewer mains with a thick, durable and flexible plastic pipe material will improve reliability of water and sanitary sewer service in the area.

The City’s Public Works and Transportation Department is overseeing roadway improvements. After the water and sanitary sewer work is complete, the roadway between Eastern Star Road and AT&T Way will be resurfaced. Failing sections of concrete curb, gutter and drive approaches also will be replaced during the project.

As a result of the ongoing work, East Sanford Street, between North Collins Street and just east of Eastern Star Road, will be closed to through traffic for about one month. Afterward, the section of East Sanford Street to the east of the entrance to the Claremont Apartments will be closed for several weeks as water and sewer main replacements are finished.

Local traffic will have access to apartments in the area during all of the water, sewer and roadway construction.

Road resurfacing is set to begin in July. One lane of traffic in each direction will remain open on Sanford during the resurfacing work, which is set to be finished by Aug. 1, 2020.
