Sprinkler Evaluation

Arlington residents can make sure their home water sprinkler systems are up to the challenge of a Texas summer by monitoring their water usage online and signing up for weekly watering advice or free sprinkler evaluations now. Because a leaky sprinkler could waste water and unnecessarily contribute to a high water bill, yearly maintenance is a great way to make the most of time spent at home.

Arlington Water Utilities, along with Tarrant Regional Water District, continue to offer a limited amount of free sprinkler system evaluations to Arlington Water customers. Though residents must be at home for the evaluation, licensed irrigators doing the evaluations are observing all appropriate social distancing guidelines.

Arlington Water Utilities customers with remote-read meters can sign up online for high water usage and high bill email alerts to help better monitor their water use and avoid utility bill surprises. Here are some tips for Arlington residents to assist in at home sprinkler maintenance:

• Conduct monthly, two minute per zone inspections to identify and adjust any sprinkler heads that are spraying water on pavement.

• Adjust irrigation controller settings to water infrequently (up to twice per week in July and August) and deep into the soil by using the cycle and soak method to promote strong, drought resistant roots

• Water in the early morning or evening to reduce evaporation.

• Install a three-inch layer of mulch around plants to retain soil moisture.

• Replace portions of unused turf grass with native and drought tolerant plants with help from Texas Smartscape: www.txsmartscape.com.

• Arlington Water Utilities weekly watering advice is another great resource for all things conservation and irrigation related. Residents can sign up for email advice at waterisawesome.com/weekly-watering-advice/.
