Optimism comes in handy when you’re a small business owner. A sense of humor helps, too.

Luckily, Jesus Garcia, co-owner of the newly opened Kintaro Ramen in downtown Arlington, seems to have both.

“We opened on April 1st – April Fools Day. We won’t forget that,” he says. With a shelter-in-place order affecting Arlington, Garcia and his co-owner Han Le, considered pushing back their opening date, which had already been delayed due to some construction issues. Kintaro is located at 101 W. Abram St., in Suite 130.

“We thought, ‘Would it be worth it to open up during this time?’” Garcia says. He chose to see the positive in the situation, pointing out that opening at a slower time will help his staff gain experience and ease into their roles. In addition to carry-out and curbside order pick-up, Kintaro Ramen is also teaming with Uber Eats and Door Dash to serve customers.

“Ultimately, we’re optimistic,” he says. “Of course, the numbers have been less than what they will be. But for people to come out and support us already, that’s been awesome.”

Garcia is the owner of two other North Texas restaurants, both called Oni Ramen. One is in the West 7th development in Fort Worth; one is in Dallas’ Deep Ellum. Seeing the revitalization of Arlington’s downtown, he decided his new upscale ramen restaurant would be a perfect fit. The name Kintaro translates into “The Golden Boy” in Japanese and is related to a folk tale about a boy hero, Garcia said.

The Kintaro Ramen menu, which is posted on the business’ Facebook page (facebook.com/kintaroarlington), features detailed descriptions of the flavorful ingredients that go into its Tonkotsu, Chintan, or Miso ramen, as well as appetizers like pork gyoza (a type of dumpling) and sunomono (a cucumber salad tossed with seaweed and a sesame vinaigrette). The restaurant also has Japanese bottled beer and sake available for curbside or to-go service.

Kintaro Ramen is currently open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Their menu and ordering information can be found on their Facebook page or their website kintaroramen.kitchen
