When UT Arlington student AJ Muñoz was 9 years old, her father wanted her to learn martial arts for self-defense. Fast forward to 2020, Muñoz, is one of the biggest taekwondo stars in the world.

"I've been undefeated in the nation and the world since 2014, and I think that is kind of crazy," Muñoz said.

Muñoz competes in the Poomsae variation of the sport, earning titles for her original freestyle routines set to music. She trains and choreographs while balancing her classwork at UTA, where she studies psychology and exercise science.

"I think one of the things I love most about UTA is the diversity," Muñoz said. "You can go from one side of campus to the other side and hear at least seven different languages."

Muñoz says she realized her American dream once she began setting goals for her life.

"Pursuing the American dream has a lot to do with finding who you are and then finding the goal you want to become, and going after that," Muñoz said. "And I think if you can, you're one of the few that really push far in life."
