The new year is here, which means many of us are ready to put away the holiday cookies and get more active to reach those 2020 fitness goals.  Arlington Parks and Recreation can help you keep your resolution to stay fit and have fun while getting in shape! With nearly 100 parks, numerous adult and youth sports programs, 4 golf courses, Arlington Tennis Center and outstanding recreation and activity centers, everyone can find fun activities to take part in this new year, regardless of age or fitness level.  Here are 5 ways you can stay fit in 2020 with Arlington Parks and Recreation:

Splash into a New You at the Hugh Smith Indoor Pool
Just because winter is here doesn’t mean you have to give up your favorite aquatic activities! Hugh Smith Indoor Pool operates year-round and offers membership passes, swimming lessons, and several types of traditional water aerobics classes.  If you want to try something adventurous, you can take part in Aqua Stand Up, a fun training program inspired by the stand-up paddle board that involves fitness techniques like HIIT, Pilates, and Yoga, all choreographed to music for a highly effective full-body workout!  For the month of January, the following discounts are available at Hugh Smith Indoor Pool:

  • 15% off indoor passes
  • Buy 2 months get one free
  • 10% off all indoor pool passes and membership

Grab your friends and play some Pickleball at the Arlington Tennis Center
This fun paddle sport is an addicting activity for all ages and skill levels! Pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong and is very easy to learn and play. Participants use a solid paddle to hit a whiffle ball over a net. The court is only one third the size of a regular tennis court, providing a lower-impact workout. The Arlington Tennis Center offers Pickleball classes, private lessons, and even an adult league. Pickleball equipment is available to rent, or you may bring your own. Go for a relaxing walk, run, or bike ride on one of Arlington’s many beautiful trails
Did you know Arlington has over 4,000 acres of park land with 56 paved trails throughout? No matter where you are, you’re never far from a trail that runs through one of the city’s many scenic and natural areas. These trails are one of the most highly requested amenities in the Arlington parks system, and they serve as a relaxing escape for many citizens who use them daily to achieve their fitness goals. River Legacy Park, the crown jewel of the Arlington parks system, has over 8 miles of paved hike and bike trails alone, in addition to a 10-mile mountain bike trail. Some other trails that are popular among walkers and bikers include Veterans Park, Village Creek Historical Area, and Dr. Robert Cluck and Richard Greene Linear Park. You can visit the Park Finder to find the perfect trail suited for you and your fitness goals.

Arlington offers several sports leagues just for adults, which is a great way to stay active, connect with friends, and feed your competitive spirit! Get involved in basketball, flag football, inline hockey, kickball, softball, and volleyball leagues.
