Arlington Public Library held its 4th annual Chess Club Tournament on April 13, 2019.

Saturday, April 13, 21 students tested their strategic skills at the Arlington Public Library's 4th annual Chess Club Tournament.

Competitors ages 5-16 came early to check in for this Swiss-style, non-elimination tournament. Two chess coaches, Troy Gillispie and Chris Wood, were on hand to lead the competition for the fourth year. After hearing match rules, the room was silent as the students played five rounds.

Chess is a strategy game played by millions of people world-wide, including Chess Clubs at the Downtown Library and Southwest Branch. Clubs and competition groups allow players to meet and learn from each other.

“We appreciate the Arlington library continuing to provide the chess clubs and offering this tournament which gave my children a chance to compete,” said one competitor’s parent. The players enjoyed the competition as well, with many eagerly looking forward to the next tournament.

At the tournament’s conclusion, all players received a certificate. The three players with the highest point scores were awarded trophy provide by the Arlington Chess Club. Jackie Bias came in first place, followed by Elijah Jordan in second and Patrick Foxsmith in third. The library greatly appreciates the support and time of the dedicated volunteers and families who attended the tournament.
